Aerospace Surface Treatment - ECM

The ECM process can be used to machine any hardness of conductive metal, with key benefits being:

  • high metal removal rates up to 10mm/min
  • surface finishes up to 0.04ra
  • Extremely low tooling costs
  • Very low running costs
  • Zero burr creation
  • Cold processing with no machining affect to the material structure

These benefits ensure that ECM is useful in a number of industries but in particular, Aerospace. Surface Treatment in the aerospace requires particularly high levels of accuracy in order to ensure the safety of aircraft in the air. The high metal removal rates and zero burr creation associated with ECM enable a finish suitable for aerospace surface treatment. UK aerospace clients can now benefit from the 60 years of experience within the Deburring and Finishing group when it comes to choosing a surface treatment supplier.

Other current examples of this process in production are:

  • Machining internal fuel cavities in Diesel Fuel Injector nozzles and bodies
  • Forming rifling in gun barrels
  • Shaping turbine blades and blisks in jet engines and gas turbines
  • Machining high pressure recesses in common rail pump bodies
  • Removing feeder rods from hard material aerospace castings
  • Drilling internal cross holes in pistons
